Aspen Surgery Center is governed by six board members. Three physicians are elected by the medical staff, John Muir and NSH have one representative each, and the medical director serves as an ex-officio member. Each board member has one equal vote.

Dr. Stephen Wells


Dr. Stephen Wells grew up in Southern California before moving to Louisiana where he received his college education and medical school training. Dr. Wells moved back to California to complete his specialty training in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Los Angeles County / USC Medical Center. After a four-year stint working at the busiest university hospital in the country, he settled permanently with his wife and 2 daughters in the East Bay. Dr. Wells has been in practice in the area now for 20 years. With the help of several other colleagues, he helped bring robotic surgery to John Muir Medical Center Walnut Creek Campus, and then subsequently developed a Midwifery program allowing for obstetric care for low risk women to be provided by certified midwives. In his spare time, Dr. Wells serves as attending physician for 200+ student youth-group mission trips twice yearly with his church, as well as yearly surgical mission trips to Haiti and Ethiopia. His other passions include family vacations, hunting, and fishing.

Jane A. Willemsen


Jane A. Willemsen is President and Chief Administrative Officer of John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek. In her role, Ms. Willemsen is responsible for the operations of the medical center, developing strategies for future growth and program development. She also serves as a member of the John Muir Health Executive Leadership Team. Under her leadership, John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report for six consecutive years. Prior to joining the medical center in 2006, Ms. Willemsen served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Iowa, and a Master of Management degree from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at North Western University.

Dr. Haywon Lieh


Dr. Haywon Lieh grew up in southern California and attended UCLA where she majored in biochemistry and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Lieh went to UCSF Medical School, then did Internal Medicine residency at University of Texas, Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. After completing Internal Medicine residency, she returned to the Bay Area for anesthesia residency and cardiac anesthesia fellowship at UCSF. Dr. Lieh is Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology. She joined Medical Anesthesia Consultants in 1994 and has been a fulltime outpatient anesthesiologist for over ten years and Medical Director for over seven years. When not working at Aspen Surgery Center, Dr. Lieh is busy trying to keep up with her 2 sons.
